Study Quantity Surveying Online: A Practical Guide for NZ Construction Professionals

A lot of people in construction reach a point where they know the commercial side of a project matters, but they’ve never had the chance to learn it properly. They’re on site, or running sub-trade work, or sitting in a project management role, and the QS function is handled by someone else, or not handled well at all.

Studying quantity surveying online is the most practical way to fix that, without stopping work and without moving to a university campus. Not all online courses are the same, and the term gets used to cover everything from a two-hour YouTube series to a proper professional training programme.

Below is what online QS study actually looks like, what you should expect from a serious course, and what the NZES programme delivers.

What Does It Mean to Study Quantity Surveying Online?

Quantity surveying is the commercial management of construction. That covers cost planning, estimating, tendering, measurement, contract administration, and final accounts. A quantity surveyor is the person who manages what a project costs, before it starts, during construction, and at the end.

Studying it online means accessing that training through a digital platform rather than a lecture theatre. The format varies:

  • Short courses on platforms like Udemy cover individual topics (estimating basics, reading drawings) and are useful for picking up specific skills.
  • Polytechnic and university programmes are available partially online but often require residential blocks or campus attendance at some stage.
  • Specialist training providers like NZES deliver the full practical curriculum online, with tutor support built in.

The key question is whether the course teaches you to actually do the work, measure quantities, price a tender, manage a contract, or just covers the theory.

Who Studies QS Online, and Why

The people who come through NZES are not fresh school leavers. Most are already working in construction in some capacity:

  • Builders and subcontractors who want to move into commercial QS or estimating roles
  • Site and project managers looking to round out their commercial knowledge
  • Overseas-trained professionals who need NZ-specific skills and terminology
  • Admin and office staff in construction companies who want to step into the numbers side
  • People returning to work who want a credible, practical qualification

What they have in common is that they can’t stop working to go back to study full-time. Online delivery is not a compromise for these people. It’s the only way it works.

What You Actually Learn in a Serious QS Programme

A properly structured online QS course should cover:

Measurement and take-off. Reading construction drawings and quantifying what’s needed. This is the foundation of everything else. If you can’t measure correctly, nothing downstream is reliable. The NZES Full Estimating and Surveying Certificate uses the NZ Standard Methods of Measurement, which is the industry standard for how quantities are measured and described on NZ projects.

Unit rate build-up. Understanding how a price is constructed from labour, material, plant, overhead, and margin. A well-built rate tells a story about how the work will actually be done. A poorly built rate becomes a problem halfway through a project. See our article on the unit rate build-up in tendering.

Estimating and tendering. How to prepare a tender from first principles. Elemental estimating, preliminary costs, subcontractor coordination. What a complete tender looks like, and how to price it without leaving money on the table. Related reading: Elemental Cost Analysis in NZ Construction.

Post-contract administration. What happens after the contract is signed: progress claims, variations, extension of time, defects, retention, and final account. This is where most of the commercial risk sits, and where under-skilled teams lose money. See also: The Pillars of Post-Contract Administration and Retention Money in NZ Construction.

Contract conditions. NZ construction runs on NZS 3910. Understanding how the contract allocates risk, what your obligations are, and what happens when things go wrong is not optional knowledge for anyone managing a project commercially.

Cash flow management. Why projects run short of money even when they’re profitable on paper, and how to manage the payment cycle. Related: Cash Flow in Construction.

How the NZES Programme Works

The NZES Full Estimating and Surveying Certificate runs online, self-paced, with tutor support from a working Senior QS.

You work through the material at your own pace. No fixed lecture times, no weekly deadlines. Most students complete the course in three to six months, fitting study around their existing work. The total recommended study time is around 130 hours.

Each module ends with an assessment. When you complete a module, you receive a test paper. You work through it and submit it to your tutor. Your tutor marks it and sends you written feedback. It is not automated. A qualified QS reads your work.

You get direct access to a Senior QS. Your tutor is a working professional who can answer practical questions, not just questions about the course material, but about real situations you’re dealing with on the job. This is what separates NZES from a video course.

The material is NZ-specific. The measurement methodology, contract conditions, and examples are based on how construction works in New Zealand. If you’ve studied QS overseas, this matters. The NZ market has its own standards, forms of contract, and commercial practices.

What You Get at the End

Graduates of the NZES Full Estimating and Surveying Certificate receive:

  • A certificate from NZES recognising completion of the programme
  • A reference letter from a Senior QS, which goes a long way with construction employers
  • The practical skills to work in an estimating or QS role with confidence
  • A pathway toward NZIQS membership, the professional body for quantity surveyors in New Zealand

The certificate is employer-facing. It signals that you’ve been trained in NZ measurement practice, estimating, tendering, and contract administration, not just that you’ve watched some videos.

Can You Study QS Online Without Any Construction Background?

Yes, and plenty of NZES students do. A basic understanding of how construction works helps, but it is not a requirement to enrol. The programme builds from first principles.

What matters more is whether you’re motivated to learn the material properly. QS is a technical discipline. You are learning to read drawings, price work, and manage contracts. It takes effort. The students who get the most out of the programme are the ones who apply what they’re learning to real work as they go.

How Long Does It Take to Learn Quantity Surveying Online?

The NZES certificate takes most students three to six months, studying part-time alongside work. Some finish faster. Some take longer. The self-paced format means there is no penalty for taking more time when work gets busy.

To become a fully qualified QS with NZIQS membership, you need experience on top of training. NZIQS recognises the NZES certificate as evidence of practical training, and graduates typically use it as a foundation while building their experience in a QS or estimating role.

Is Online QS Study Taken Seriously by Employers?

Employers care more about what you can do than where you studied. If you can read drawings, build a rate, price a tender, and manage a contract, they want you. The certificate demonstrates that you’ve been trained to do those things.

NZES has been training estimators and quantity surveyors in New Zealand for over twenty years. Our graduates work at construction companies, cost consulting firms, and project management organisations across New Zealand and internationally.

What we hear back from employers is that NZES graduates understand NZ measurement practice and can apply it on day one. That is the outcome the programme is designed to deliver.
