Post-contract administration micro-credential construction

Every year, construction companies across New Zealand lose hundreds of millions of dollars. Not from poor workmanship. Not from blown budgets. From what happens after the contract is signed.

Post-contract administration is the discipline that governs how a project is managed commercially from the moment the ink dries. It is how progress claims get paid, how variations get approved, how delays get documented, and how disputes get resolved – or avoided. In meetings with clients and consultants, those who understand post-contract administration know exactly what each party’s drivers are, what they are focusing on, and how decisions are really being made.

Most people in construction know this work exists. Very few know how to do it correctly. That gap costs the industry more money than almost anything else.

What Is Post-Contract Administration?

If the contract sets the rules of the game, post-contract administration is how you play it.

It covers everything that happens after the contract is signed and work begins. Progress claims. Variation management. Extensions of time. Dispute resolution. Cost control.

These are not administrative tasks. They are the commercial engine of a project. Get them right, and a project stays financially healthy. Get them wrong, and margins disappear, disputes escalate, and profitable jobs turn into losses.

It applies to contractors, subcontractors, quantity surveyors, project managers, and contracts administrators. Anyone involved in the commercial management of a building contract needs to understand it.

Why It Matters More Than Ever

The front end of construction (estimating, measurement, takeoffs, BOQ preparation) is being reshaped by technology. AI tools are already handling tasks that used to take days.

Post-contract administration is different.

Claims, disputes, delays, and variations require human judgment, contractual knowledge, and the ability to negotiate under pressure. These are not tasks a tool can automate. They are skills that become more valuable as everything else gets commoditised.

Construction companies across New Zealand are actively seeking competent people to handle this work. Those who can demonstrate formal post-contract knowledge are being promoted faster, paid more, and trusted with larger projects.

The NZQA Level 6 Micro-Credential in Post-Contract Administration

This is the only NZQA-registered programme in New Zealand specifically focused on post-contract administration.

Level 6 on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework. 29 credits. The same level as a diploma.

View The Course Page

It is completely separate from the Full Estimating and Surveying Certificate.

Different programme, different credential, different outcome. Just as practical.

If post-contract administration is where you work, or where you want to work, this is the qualification that recognises that.

What the Programme Covers

Five modules. Each one covers a critical area of post-contract work, taught through real-world case studies and tutoring from a senior quantity surveyor.

Module 1: Progress Claims Management

Progress claims are contractual documents, not just simple invoices. Governed by the Construction Contracts Act 2002, a late or incomplete claim can be reduced or rejected. This module covers how to prepare, submit, and certify claims correctly so contractors get paid what they are owed.

Module 2: Variation Claims Handling

Variations are inevitable. Unpaid variations are not. This module covers how to identify scope changes, document them, and price them correctly under NZS 3910. Most variation disputes come down to documentation, not entitlement.

Module 3: Extension of Time Claims

Delays happen on every project. Miss a notice deadline under NZS 3910 and you are exposed to liquidated damages for delays that were not your fault. This module covers how to identify delay events, submit notices correctly, and build a compelling EOT claim.

Module 4: Dispute Resolution Techniques

The Construction Contracts Act gives contractors a powerful tool: adjudication. Pay now, argue later, binding decision in 20 working days, project keeps running. This module covers negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and adjudication, and when to use each.

Module 5: Cost Control and Reporting

Budget monitoring, subcontractor accounts, financial forecasting, and reporting. The skills that keep a project profitable from first claim to final account.

How does the course work?

It’s online and self-paced. Study around your job with no fixed class times or live sessions.

The average graduation is around 15 to 30 weeks

Our Quantity Surveyors work with each student personally from enrollment to graduation.

All material is delivered through our online platform – Accessed whenever you need it

Who is this qualification for?

This programme is for anyone who wants to build serious commercial skills in construction and earn an NZQA credential that proves it.

That includes experienced professionals: site managers, project managers, contracts administrators, quantity surveyors, and estimators who deal with claims, variations, and disputes and want formal recognition for what they already do.

It also includes people who are newer to the industry and want to fast-track their commercial knowledge.

If you are working in construction and want to move into a contract or commercial role, this qualification gives you the foundation and the credentials to make that move.

If you want an NZQA qualification that is directly relevant to the NZ construction sector.

If you need a practical, recognised skill set built around the contracts that govern real projects.
